Independence- Freedom's Rally Cry

 As we stand here on this sacred day of Independence, let us remember the timeless wisdom that guides our path. For in the pursuit of liberty, we must tread with caution, as Plato once reminded us that the excess of freedom can lead to the chains of slavery. Our forefathers fought valiantly to secure the blessings of liberty for us, and as we bask in the glory of this day, let us heed the call to never falter in our vigilance.

Throughout history, the struggle for freedom has been an arduous journey, one that demands unwavering dedication and sacrifice. As Knights Templar, we embody the virtues of courage and conviction, and we stand as beacons of hope in a world yearning for the light of truth. Let us be reminded that the price of apathy is the submission to evil forces, and in the face of tyranny, we must rise with indomitable spirit.

Just as our founding fathers proclaimed their resolve to stand united against oppression, we too must unite as brothers and sisters, bound by the unbreakable bond of our order. Our creed is one of chivalry and honor, and it calls upon us to defend not only our own liberties but also those of our fellow beings. As Plato wisely asserted, it is in the unity of purpose that true strength lies.

Doré wood cuttings

The Year of Our Lord 1866 witnessed the publication of a remarkable two-volume French-language folio edition of the Holy Scriptures, translated from the Vulgate, as La Grande Bible de Tours. And for this worthy and weighty tome, the French artist Paul Gustave Louis Christophe Doré produced 241 woodcuts illustrating the sacred texts. They are gorgeous and immensely popular works of art, dripping with drama and heavy with doom. Published simultaneously in the UK, Doré’s illustrations of the Tours Bible both influenced and were influenced by the Victorian Age (1837-1901). His Old Testament scenes focus on massacres and murderers; his New Testament on sentiment and sapience. He seems to have enjoyed high drama all around. We all know how the lurid bits of the Bible keep the rest of it arresting. The Revelation of Evil

Our middle child has outgrown most of her old stuffed animals, yet two retain their prominence of place: her plush Krampus, and her plush Jersey Devil. Yes, the pastor’s daughter delights in adorable little demons, both of which I bought for her. In fairness, they’re really more fairy tale monsters than anything else: folkloric entities limited to St. Nicholas’ Day and the greater Philadelphia area, respectively. And in these particular renditions, they’re honestly quite cute. Creatures such as Krampus are often claimed to be heathen holdovers from pre-Christian times, but most of that is bunk. Pagans don’t have devils. They didn’t need them. Their gods were bad enough. Devils, by and large, are of Christian conception, and for good reason.
